Fable will officially be 20 hours long, Xbox confirms in new interview
Fable will officially be 20 hours long, according to new comments from Playground Games. The developer says the upcoming fantasy RPG’s main story will take approximately 15–20 hours to complete, while side quests and open-world exploration could add another 15–20 hours.
The information was shared during a group Q&A at Gamescom 2026. Associate game director Will Kennedy explained that the mainline quest content and optional activities each represent roughly 15–20 hours of gameplay.
Main story takes 15–20 hours
Playground Games has estimated that players who focus primarily on the central storyline will spend around 15–20 hours in Albion. That places the campaign closer to a focused role-playing experience than to an enormous, 100-hour open-world adventure.
The developers have not presented 20 hours as a strict limit. Actual playtime will depend on a player’s pace, difficulty, exploration habits, combat style, and how often they engage with optional activities.
Players who rush through the main objectives may finish sooner, while those who explore every area and spend time with the game’s social systems may take longer.
Side content can double playtime
The main quest is only part of the experience. Playground Games says Fable contains another 15–20 hours of side quests and open-world exploration.
This optional content includes activities such as:
- Side quests.
- Exploration across Albion.
- NPC interactions.
- Combat encounters.
- Purchasable homes.
- Trading and other life systems.
- Family and relationship activities.
That means a typical playthrough involving both the main story and a substantial amount of optional content could last approximately 30–40 hours. However, the two estimates should not be treated as a guaranteed total because some exploration and side activities may overlap with the main campaign.
“Limitless” life systems
Playground Games also stressed that Fable’s life systems are not tied to a fixed completion time. Players can continue spending time in Albion through social activities, relationships, homes, trading, and other role-playing features.
These systems are intended to give players reasons to remain in the world after completing major story missions. The total experience could therefore vary significantly between players, especially for those who enjoy role-playing rather than simply following quest markers.
Release date and platforms
Fable is currently scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. The game is also expected to arrive on Xbox Game Pass on its launch day.
The new Fable is being developed by Playground Games, the studio best known for the Forza Horizon series. It is a reboot of the classic Xbox fantasy franchise, bringing back its humour, morality systems, character-driven storytelling, and open-world role-playing features.
A shorter but focused RPG
A 15–20-hour main story may disappoint players expecting a huge open-world campaign, but it could also benefit the game’s pacing. A shorter campaign gives Playground Games more room to focus on memorable characters, meaningful choices, varied quests, and a world that rewards exploration without becoming repetitive.
The additional side content and flexible life systems could provide the longer experience that many role-playing fans want, while allowing players who prefer a focused adventure to finish the story in a reasonable amount of time.
Summary: Fable will officially be 20 hours long for players concentrating on the main quest, while side content and exploration could add a similar amount of gameplay. With its life systems described as effectively limitless, the final playtime will depend on how deeply each player explores Albion.
