GPT‑6 is bringing ChatGPT more interactive, visual answers and faster responses—not just a new model name. Its standout feature is Intelligent UI, which can turn a reply into a diagram, chart, form, or small interactive tool when that suits the question.
What’s new
- Interactive answers: ChatGPT can combine text with visuals and controls—for example, a tappable diagram to explain a topic, a comparison layout, or a bill-splitting tool. It still gives a plain text answer when that’s the better fit.
- Answers arrive sooner: GPT‑6 can begin responding while it continues reasoning or using tools, then add useful findings without waiting to deliver everything at once. OpenAI says web-search answers start 44% sooner on average than with GPT‑5.6 Instant.
- More capable reasoning: Users can choose a thinking level, from faster Instant responses to more extended reasoning, depending on their plan.
- Improved safety and calibration: OpenAI says GPT‑6 is better at resisting some multi-turn attempts to bypass safeguards and at acknowledging when it lacks the information or tools to answer.
Which model you get
OpenAI’s October 7 rollout uses different models by plan:
The rollout began with paid plans and expanded to Free and Go the following day. Availability can still depend on account or workspace settings. GPT‑6 Pro, powered by GPT‑6 Astra, is available on eligible Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans; it does not support Intelligent UI.
What it means in practice
You can ask ChatGPT to explain a concept, compare options, or help with a small task, and it may create a visual or interactive response you can use in the conversation. You don’t need a special prompt—the model chooses the format based on the request. OpenAI says this update applies to the Chat experience; the models in ChatGPT Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.
Intelligent UI is rolling out on the web and supported, updated apps. It isn’t available with GPT‑6 Pro effort or in older ChatGPT desktop apps.
GPT‑6 Astra is the model behind ChatGPT’s “Pro” reasoning mode. It’s intended for difficult questions and longer-running tasks where deeper reasoning matters; it is not the default engine for every GPT‑6 chat.
What it can do
Astra is OpenAI’s flagship GPT‑6 model. In Pro mode, it can tackle demanding work such as complex research, coding and engineering, mathematical reasoning, document analysis, and multi-step workflows. OpenAI has highlighted examples including generating CAD designs and building working applications from prompts, though real-world results still need checking.
How Pro mode differs
In ChatGPT’s model menu, choosing GPT‑6 and setting the thinking level to Pro selects GPT‑6 Pro, powered by Astra. The regular GPT‑6 thinking levels—Instant, Medium, High, and Extra High—use GPT‑6 Sol instead.
One trade-off: Intelligent UI, which can create interactive diagrams, charts, forms, and tools within a reply, is not available with Pro effort. It works with GPT‑6 from Instant through Extra High.
Access and limits
GPT‑6 Pro is available on eligible Pro $100, Pro $200, Business, and Enterprise plans; Enterprise access may depend on workspace permissions. It has usage limits, so a Pro subscription does not mean unlimited Astra use.
In short, use Astra Pro when the task is especially demanding and you’re willing to trade speed or usage allowance for deeper reasoning. For everyday questions or interactive visual answers, GPT‑6 Sol at a lower thinking level may be a better fit.
