## How Scam Alert works

The on-device model analyses incoming messages from people who are not in the user's contacts. Instead of looking for specific keywords, it examines linguistic signals and conversational structure to identify patterns associated with known scams. The model was trained on scam conversations that users have previously reported.

When the system believes a message is likely part of a scam attempt, it displays a warning inside the chat. The warning gives the user three options:

- Block the sender.
- Report the conversation.
- Continue chatting if they believe the warning is incorrect.

Only the recipient sees the alert; the sender is not notified that their message was flagged.

## Privacy and user control

WhatsApp emphasises that Scam Alert complements, rather than replaces, end-to-end encryption. The company says:

- No message content leaves the device for classification.
- Flagged messages are not automatically reported to WhatsApp or Meta.
- Users can disable Scam Alert at any time.

If a user believes a warning is a false positive, they can mark the chat as **trusted**. This removes the warning and prevents Scam Alert from flagging that contact again. Users can also choose to share the last five messages from a trusted chat with WhatsApp to help improve the feature's accuracy, but this is entirely optional.

Scam messages are one of the biggest threats on WhatsApp, especially in regions where the app is widely used for personal and business communication. Traditional spam filters often struggle with scams because they rely on known numbers or simple keyword matching, while modern scams use social engineering and evolving language patterns.
