Second Life, which was launched in 2003, is still profitable and has a much larger community than other virtual reality platforms.

The term “metaverse” is the most recent buzzword to dominate the tech world. While Mark Zuckerberg undoubtedly popularised Metaverse, it is not the first time this concept has been identified. The term “Metaverse” was coined by fictional writer  in 1992 “The first Metaverse was founded around 20 years ago. “Second Life” is a virtual world created by “Philip Rosedale  and now that metaverse is more popular than ever, he has decided to bring back an advanced version of it. According to Cnet, Rosedale has assigned a core team to work on evolving Second Life.

Rosedale hopes that creating a community-focused world will address some metaverse issues that aren’t being addressed by VR headsets yet. Rosedale co-founded High Fidelity, a VR company that promised a high-end, low-latency VR experience, in 2013.
However, the company has moved away from VR and toward other technologies such as Spatial Audio. In 2019, he stated that VR had not yet reached a level of quality that most people would want to use. According to the Cnet report, Rosedale believes that VR headsets are still insufficient because they act as a “blindfold to the real world that only some people feel comfortable enough to use.”

While Rosedale believes there is still time for VR headsets to achieve iPhone-level popularity, he is focusing his efforts on a metaverse platform that does not require headsets. This is where his previous Second Life venture comes into play. Rosedale told Cnet that he plans to be a strategic advisor to Second Life (in its second life) with some new ideas, while also working on other projects.

According to the report, Second Life, which was launched in 2003, is still profitable and has a much larger community than most Virtual – reality platforms. Since its inception, Second Life has had over 73 million accounts created, with an estimated 900,000 active users.
Rosedale considers Second Life’s sellable content to be NFTs in some ways. He also acknowledges the competition for virtual places such as Roblox and Minecraft, which he considers to be the most successful competing examples, as well as others.
