Photo sharing app Snapchat to support nine Indian languages including Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, and Punjabi. Snap Inc. has confirmed it will carry out support for five additional Indian languages in the coming weeks, including Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. This comes alongside Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi languages, introduced last year on Snapchat, bringing the total to nine languages.
The new languages are continuing Snap’s dedication to developing a local Indian product. The company opened its first office in Mumbai in 2019 and formed a team to develop local collaborations, create a dedicated community of creators and users and support local advertisers.
The company announced partnerships with NDTV, WWM Times Group and TSeries among others. It also launched Landmarkers — augmented reality (AR) experiences— for two iconic Indian monuments, the Taj Mahal and the Gateway of India, as well as AR Lenses, Filters and Stickers during Indian festivals, for IPL teams and Bollywood movies. Snap Inc. has also recently teamed up with Reliance Jio for a creative AR challenge for a first of its kind, “Jio’s Got Talent.”
Nana Murugesan, Managing Director, International Markets at Snap Inc., “We understand how important language is in deepening relationships and we continue to roll out new features and experiences that reflect the culture and values of our community in India. We want our platform to be accessible to as many people here as possible.”
Snapchat provides a unique and fresh way to interact with others. Snapchat had something else in mind where the standard was to have channels where everything is saved and preserved for later. Snapchat has been fast gaining fame, especially among the younger generation. Part of that success can be linked to having something new for Snapchat to offer to its users. Snapchat was a true pioneer in introducing augmented reality through filters and immersive lenses to its users. Notably before Instagram and Facebook, Snapchat had Stories. Before it was cool, you might tell Snapchat had Stories.
